Bird Rock Homes
Sunny La Jolla, California, a part of the city of San Diego, is rapidly gaining fame for its upscale beach lifestyle, its dazzling properties, its unique and eclectic culture, and its striking natural beauty. Comprised of more than 15 individual neighborhoods, La Jolla truly offers something for everyone.
Bird Rock, located south of La Jolla Bay at the southern limits of the La Jolla area, is one of La Jolla's charming neighborhoods. Named for the large white rock just offshore, a favorite perch for many local birds, Bird Rock is home to Tourmaline Beach, which is a popular surf spot and diving area, though recreational swimming is not allowed. There is a small commercial district along La Jolla Boulevard, featuring boutique shops and a variety of restaurants. Bird Rock is home to an outstanding local school, which makes the Bird rock homes particularly attractive to young families.
Most Bird Rock homes were built between 1920 and 1950. Although there are some newer remodels, the neighborhood retains the air of an antique seaside village. Bird Rock homes and lots are smaller than many in other areas of La Jolla, many averaging just over 1,000 square feet. These are perfect for couples, families, and retirees looking to downsize, and usually sell for about $1 million. Larger Bird Rock homes of 1,500 square feet or more, or those featuring particularly special ocean views, may sell for upward of $1.5 million, and oceanfront homes can go for at least twice that. There are only a few condominiums available in the area, but with prices starting at around $500k, condos are among the most affordable properties in all of La Jolla, and offer attractive community amenities.
